Using Cannabis Vaporizers for pain doesn't make me a terrible parent. You wouldn't chastise a mother or father for taking heart medicine or insulin to keep them alive and healthy, so why do people think it's okay to judge me for using cannabis to relieve my chronic pain? I'm a parent, and I'm a medical cannabis patient. And I'm not alone.
Thousands of Parents in the UK Use Legal Medical Marijuana
There are plenty of other parents like me who use cannabis to manage their health conditions. In fact, there are thousands of us. And we're not doing anything wrong. We're just trying to take care of our families and ourselves.
The number of medical users in the UK is growing. By 2024, about 337.9K patients in the UK will be prescribed cannabis.
Anyone, including parents, can consume cannabis medically for several legal reasons, such as spasticity, severe treatment-resistant epilepsy, chronic pain, and nausea and vomiting.
We deserve to be heard and respected.
When people look down on me for using cannabis, I feel like I'm doing something wrong. But I'm not. I'm just trying to take care of my family the best way that I can. And that's nothing to be ashamed of.
Cannabis is a Safer Option for Chronic Pain Than Opioids
It surprised many people to learn that cannabis is a safer option for chronic pain than opioids. In fact, opioids cause more deaths in the UK each year than heroin and cocaine combined. Experts have never linked cannabis to a single casualty.
Many people turn to alcohol to combat pain, but alcohol is a much more dangerous drug. It's not only opioids. It can seriously damage the liver and other organs. Cannabis doesn't have any of those risks.
Cannabis Has Helped Me Be a Better Parent
Despite what some people might think, cannabis hasn't made me a negligent parent. In fact, it's helped me to be a better one. I'm more present and attentive when I'm not in pain. I can focus on my kids and enjoy time with them.
Cannabis has also helped me manage my anxiety and depression. It's a natural way to treat my conditions without the risk of overdose or addiction. I'm a better parent when I'm not in pain, anxious, or sad.
Overall, many things worry and make me anxious. When I can stop and take a few puffs of my vape pen, I calm down, find clarity, and get my head back into the task. It's also easier for me to focus on my family when I'm not stressed about my health.
One mother, like me, explains,
"You know you are supposed to be taught as a parent not to holler, not to scream, not to hit your kid because that’s going to show them that they are allowed to do that when they get older. It’s easier to go and smoke and stay calm and let them do what they want and just kind of ignore it, and let it roll off. I am more patient, more calm with them."
Yes, medical marijuana can make me giddy and seem overly happy sometimes. But that's better than feeling like a zombie from the opioids I used to take.
I'm not the only parent who uses cannabis to manage their health. We shouldn't have to hide our cannabis use from the world. We're not doing anything wrong.
My Kids Know I Use Cannabis for Medical Reasons
My kids know I use cannabis for medical reasons. They know that it's helping me feel better and that it's not something to be ashamed of.
But I don't vape or smoke cannabis in front of them. I don't want them to think that it's okay to use cannabis recreationally. That's something I'll teach them when they're older.
But for now, they know that cannabis is a medicine that helps me feel better. And that's all they need to know.
There are many preconceptions about me because I use cannabis. I've seen a specific stereotype that irresponsible patients leave their products out where children can get them. This is untrue, but it's also one of the many reasons I'm vocal about my cannabis use. We must dispel these myths and educate people about the responsible use of cannabis by patients.
I lock away all my supplies in a safe place and out of reach of my children. My kids are my world, and I would never do anything to put them in danger. I would never endanger them by leaving cannabis around carelessly.
We all have a choice to make when it comes to our health. For me, that choice is cannabis. I prefer the plant-based solution to opioids and other pharmaceuticals. I'm not alone in this. Millions of people around the world use cannabis for medical reasons.
It's time to end the stigma against patients like me. We're patients like anyone else who uses medication to manage their health. We deserve respect and understanding. Cannabis has helped me be a better parent. I'm not the only one. There are millions of us. Let's end the misconceptions about medical cannabis together.
